The first two rounds of the Battery Tender Mazda MX-5 Cup saw Atlanta Motorsports Group’s Patrick Gallagher take away two podium finishes and pole points in qualifying efforts. Gallagher, the twenty one year old native of Thornville, Ohio, has high expectations for rounds 3 and 4 set to take place in New Orleans in three weeks time.
“Sebring went well for us, finishing second, third, and snagging points for pole left us sitting second in the championship standings. I was really impressed with all the guys at AMG though I’m a little bummed I couldn’t get a win for them. I can’t wait to get to NOLA and try to stretch our legs a bit.”
A last corner move for the win saw Patrick take his #44 Howard Concrete Pumping, CTL Engineering Mazda MX-5 to the finish line coming up just 0.036 seconds short of John Dean.
“ After we ended under yellow in round 1 I decided I was going to go for the last lap move that I didn’t get a chance to make in the first race. I thought our car was a bit better than anyone else’s but just couldn’t shake them off with the draft. I tried the outside with two to go and just couldn’t get it done so I knew I’d have to go through the dirt and try and get him up the inside. I saw Copeland go around the outside of John and I went for him too. I thought I had it won but John made a good move up the inside and we didn’t win it. I’m really looking forward to battling with John again.”
AMG and Patrick showed in rounds 1 and 2 that they are a pairing to keep an eye on for the 2015 Championship bid. Their next event begins on April 10th at New Orleans Motorsports Park in support of the Verizon IndyCar Series.
